Vlog: Online/Offline Resolutions

My first “vlog” aka video blog. Please be gentle!

I am aware of the bad camera positioning and such but for a first try… I don’t think it’s TOO bad. Please comment and boost my ego. Suggestions would be nice… if you want me to do this more often let me know that as well (topics couldn’t hurt either!).

I think it’s awesome. You should totally post more of these. I think it’s cool to see bloggers talking once in a while. It puts a face and a voice to the name. I’ve been wanting to do one myself for quite some time, but I’m a little too shy I think. I’ll probably end up giving it a try sooner or later.

@Lisa Marie, Thank you so much!! I think you should do ones about veganism. How to start, reasons to start, recipes, products, etc!

@Teresa YAY thank you! I am currently discussing a blogging “schedule” with Lisa Marie right now so I can post more on a variety of topics on specific days so no one “misses” a post on a topic they enjoy (if that’s not cryptic I don’t know what is lol).

I think it went really well :) Would definitely be interested in seeing more vlogs from you. Some of your resolutions are so akin to mine lol. I used a premade theme on my blog because at the time I opened it, I had SO much design work on my plate that I didn’t feel like doing it too, but that’s on my to-do list now that my plate is clear. Would absolutely love any more talk on WordPress, CSS and such. I’m a major geek for all that lol.

Anyways, running long so just want to say, good job and I hope to see more!

You have an awesome blog for sure! Very well thought out and I love your little follow-me Twitter whale. Super cool! The Vlog is really good as well. Would love to have you do some posts on your Vlog’s subjects. Everything looks and sounds great from here — good luck picking up more subscribers…

Thank you so much Brett! If I have success with gaining more subscribers, I will definitely share tips/tricks on my (hopeful/eventual) success lol.

Weird to hear your voice :) but it was good, yeah I agree I think blogs should have one topic that person knows what they are talking about. I took note from one of your posts about how to blog better, decided to talk more about my three topics which I love (frugal, being green and computer programs/internet) as well as my normal rambling…

Yay, I would love to know how you do the comments :)
{shared blog entry — One step forward, three steps back}

Sarah     twitter: @starrymom

I actually used to do some podcasting way back in the day (I don’t know if anyone remembers that lol). I used to sound less midwest and more like from Arizona but after living back in Illinois for a bit over 6 yrs I guess the midwest accent is creeping back in!

I am so glad my tips have helped narrow your niche down! It really helps when you are more focused. These days “personal” blogs that are in the form of a diary, “I did this today and ate this and talked to so-and-so” aren’t offering anything to a potential reader.

Lizzie     twitter: @lizziehancock

I loved that vlog — you’re very well spoken, and it seems like you have a lot to say on certain topics especially how to get the most out of your blog. I hope you do more soon :) Take care x

great first vlog, and an inspiration for me on several levels. Love your thoughts on what blogs should be and the building of communities around them. Hope the plans for the year go well and happy new year.

Lynda     twitter: @lynda

I love the vlog, but would prefer shorter segments… maybe 2:30 instead of 5:30.

I’m excited about any projects you get up and running this year. You totally inspire me with your continual redesigns and photos.

Lynda     twitter: @lynda

Oh, and I totally agree with you on the commercial aspect of “mommy blogging” nowadays. While I’ve benefited from some giveaways, I can’t really bring myself to regularly read those blogs. When I got into Twitter again after Noah was born, I was sad to see so much commercialism in blogging now.

Samantha     twitter: @SunsetWinds

I think vlogging is an excellent way to draw more subscribers to your blog! You did an excellent job! It reminds me of when you did your first podcast! What happened to those, anyway?
{shared blog entry — Dear Blogger and Followers,}

Sarah     twitter: @starrymom

@Lizzie, thank you! I oddly enough hear that a lot, that I speak well. I don’t understand it at all, half the time I feel like I only make sense to myself!

@Darren, yay thank you!!! I am going to try and write more about bringing back that “community” feel. I get so irritated when people start blogging just in the hopes that they will become the next superstar blogger and earn millions.

@Lynda, thank you! When I did my giveaway, I actually BOUGHT the book to… give away lol. I agree, the commercialism is INSANE! Instead of tips on how to write better, be more friendly, it’s how to make more money, how to do paid blogs, how to place the ad’s… I really will not visit those blogs because it annoys me so much and detracts from the whole site. I also agree, for the future, shorter vlogs are happier vlogs lol.

@Samantha, omgosh so few people remember the podcasting lol. It’s been YEARS! I wonder if I have the old files stored somewhere… nonetheless I will try to do more vlogs in the future lol.

I’m so impressed! I have been triple-dog-daring myself to start vlogging, but the whole thing just seems entirely too humiliating for me. I feel like a troll these days, and I don’t want anybody seeing my ugly mug. When my children grow up, they’re going to wonder where I was during their childhood because there are, like, zero pictures of me with the family. I prefer to be behind the camera. I also wanted to start a podcast — The Motherhood Uncensored podcast is literally responsible for my blog. I found her one podcast one day by complete accident, then started visiting her blog, then decided to start my own, and she talked me through the whole thing. She was amazing to me (well, she had a lot less readers back then.)

But I just can’t seem to get the gumption to do any of that. You’d think that since I have done professional recordings/film/TV/Radio that I’d be a pro at this, but somehow the whole thing changes when I’m talking about parenthood. Don’t know why — it just does. Being a mommy-blogger removes all my cool.

So anyway, I’m impressed with your first video. Good job, and good luck on future ones. Can’t wait to see them.

Kimm     twitter: @paddlinggeek

Awesome 1st vlog, I thought about doing one for the longest time but never got around to it. I agree with you, I like going to personal blogs that have 2 or 3 posts showing at one time and aren’t full of product reviews and that you saw your crush today but never had the nerve to talk to them.
{shared blog entry — What a decade}

Sarah     twitter: @starrymom

@TheFeministBreeder, thank you so much! It’s so funny how a video can make one feel so vulnerable isn’t it! I also have so few photos of me with the boys, I am very much the photographer of the family and very hypercritical of myself. I want to change that but eh… slow going.

Oh I am all about the podcasts/vodcasts so I am going to check out that podcast/blog for sure!

I wonder if in part, because parenting is a lot more personal than media (books/tv/music/etc)?

@Kimm, thank you so much! You hit the nail on the head. It makes me wonder about the person who creates a blog just to do paid blogging. I rarely return to those type of sites and find it so utterly annoying.

Lynda     twitter: @lynda

When you say 2000 subscribers, is that just RSS or other social networking sites mixed in?
{shared blog entry — A mid day’s walk}

Sarah     twitter: @starrymom

Just RSS lol. It’s a lofty goal but hey, it’s a YEAR so I hope I can achieve it lol.

Yay video! It seems so much easier. I didn’t get to listen until today because my speakers are in another state and my dogs ate all three pair of my headphones : P

You made me laugh with the ‘deserve a diamond bracelet in a blog about snow’ bit. I spent most of last year reading blogs on my BB, so they were pared down and unless people put ‘this is for money’ in text on the blog I didn’t see a lot of the buttons on the sides declaring it. I was so confused by some of my formerly favorite blogs. I do usually prefer private blogs about the person myself, but it is awful no matter what it’s about to have a sudden paragraph that is soooooo not cohesive with the rest, and clearly just to get that bizarre link in. But then again if that’s where they’re making their money then it is what it is. I may stop visiting, but I can’t be too mad at them for it.

I would like to start taking more advantage of wordpress, plugins and rss this year. I was so much better at this when I didn’t have an extra apendage : P

Also, it makes you feel better about baby weight I lost all of mine in 3 weeks, then gained it back plus 50% more in the next three weeks : P I’m definitely gung-ho to have a healthy year this year. I’m trying to decide before Saturday what info I feel comfortable sharing on echoia, since so many people I know read it. They lurk and then weeks later bring things up casually like they learned them through osmosis *eyeroll*. There’s a line I have to find between sharing motivational information and keeping things I don’t want to hear about private.

Sarah     twitter: @starrymom

Actually yes, that makes me feel a lot better about the baby weight lol.

I could probably rant forever on how blogging is so commercial, maybe that will be my next vlog lol.

I do most of my online stuff while nursing the baby, yay for laptops!
