A Moment at the Beach

We had gone out for a drive yesterday and ended up at Illinois State Beach.

I recently purchased the Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 prime lens and took some shots. I have to say, overall I am really pleased with my new lens! This is the first (and so far, only) time I’ve had a chance to use it.

Daniel was THRILLED, he made a sandcastle, played a bit in the freezing water, and overall really enjoyed himself. He also had a few moments of introspection… most likely debating if he should splash me or not I’m sure.

I think that your shots turned out great! I need to get into using my 50mm more it’s the only one I own aside from the kit lens.

Reply to Dez

Thank you! I mainly bought it for PEOPLE shots lol, I really want to practice portraits and such.

Seriously, lock up/get rid of the kit lens and just leave the 50mm on your body! It opens up a WHOLE new awesome world.

The kit lens that came with my D90? I still haven’t used lol. I mainly stick to my primes.

Can you explain all that in layman’s terms?

The kit lens is what comes with the camera “kit”. Otherwise you would purchase the camera body ONLY (as in, without the lens).

Prime lenses usually have ONE focal length like 50mm, 85mm, 200mm. Zoom lenses go from say 18-55mm, 70-300mm, etc.

So what mm would the kit lens be? And so is a 50mm lens more or less designed for things that are up close? What about those wide-angle lenses sports photogs use–what mm are they?

Sorry for all the ignorant questions! It is something that interests me but I know so little about it.

Beautiful shots, btw.

Whatever comes with the camera “kit” aka the lens that comes by default with the camera body. It’s ALWAYS a zoom lens though.

The focal length doesn’t have anything to do with it being a macro (close up) lens. However the bigger the number of the focal length means the more of a telephoto it can be.

10mm would be a super wide angle
35mm would say, be good for a room shot
50-105mm range would be good for portraits and such
200mm+ good for telephoto shots.

Not ignorant at all!!

The shots are great, i love the beach. Funny, i bloged my own beach shots a few hours ago. Beach all over the blogs :)

Thank you so much! I was surprised at how it seemed to be more pebbles than sand lol.

Joy

Yes, but it looks still nice. I used to collect some pebbles for creative and art stuff… some of them are really beautiful.

Reply to Joy

Oh the pebbles were nice to look at but surprisingly very painful to walk on lol.

I have the Canon one on my Amazon Wish List.

Your photos are always lovely, Sarah.

Aww thank you!! I played with it some more yesterday and I am starting to really love it!

Nikita

I have a new obsession with lenses now that I had the opportunity to rent some thousand $ lenses to use at quakecon 2o1o. I’m in love… Just wanted to share my wish list with you. I added the lenses I rented and the new one you purchased. They all give me warm and fuzzy feelings. RAWR!

I’ve never rented lenses before, partly because I forget most of the time to return library books and end up having to pay fines so I can just imagine how much it would cost me if I forgot to return a lens on time LOL.

Andree

Looks like you’re having fun with the new lens! Fun with toys : – )

Reply to Andree

Oh yes, I got to use it a LOT more yesterday and really love the bokeh!

Penny

Looks like alot of fun. The pictures are absolutely beautiful!

Reply to Penny

Thank you so much! We really, with the exception of Daniel, didn’t come dressed prepared but he had a blast splashing around and playing with the pebbly sand!

I love the colors! I’m so glad your EXIF data is available on flickr because I was wondering if these were shot at 1.8 or if you had stopped down. Looks liek this and several others you have on flickr were taken at 1.8. This lens looks so yummy, even wide open! *adding to my wishlist*

Thank you! Oh yes, I tend to shoot wide open most of the time and with the 85mm I’ve been very curious as how good the bokeh would be and I have to say, so far I am thrilled!

oh, such great shots! Thanks for the inspiration to use other lenses. I admit I have a 35mm and am just lazy and forgetful about putting it on the camera. I’m doing it now and going to leave it there a bit to see what I get. I love the 85mm shots you got though, so I’ll be adding that to my wish list!

I totally want a 35mm as well LOL. Just because the 50mm can sometimes be a bit TOO tight to photograph a room for example.

I also am loving that I am getting out of the 105mm macro rut although granted that is still my main go-to lens since most of my photos are nature macros.

Lynda

I love the texture you used in that first shot! The colors are awesome.

Danny’s looking very handsome! He looks so much like you.

The last two are my favorite. The sharpness! The DOF! Very awesome. I know you got this for portraits, but I know you’re going to do amazing nature photography with this lens. :)

Reply to Lynda

Thank you!! Yeah, at the heart of it I always lean towards nature. Partly because I don’t have many people subjects I’m sure LOL.

Bev

They’re looking very sharp, good detail & colour on the pebbles, I can see you’ll be using this lens a lot..

I must make an effort and use my 50mm f/1.8 lens it sits in the bag not seeing the light of day!!

Reply to Bev

Thank you! I can totally see this being one of my favorite outside lenses!

liz

the pebbles in the sand are awesome!

Reply to liz

Yay thank you Liz!

I love that photo of Daniel and the pebbles in the sand. Awesome shots, as usual Sarah. :)
