Samhain & Rss

October 31st 2006 / 2 minutes to read

First off, Blessed Samhain! I hope everyone takes the time to have a fun day, a safe day, and take a moment to think about your ancestors and loved ones. I have no clue what we will do tonight much less, what we will have for dinner. I do want to celebrate the day somehow though.

I redid the OSN url structure so if you use the RSS feed it’s changed. Please use https://onestarrynight.com/feed for the RSS feed. Let me know if you come across any weird problems or errors. I also have given up on Vibrant so that’s no more.

Speaking of RSS, I know I’ve gotten a lot of comments lately about people that don’t offer them, don’t know what feeds even do, or why someone would choose to use them. I suggest getting your feet wet so to speak. I do believe Firefox has a built in newsreader as well called “Live Bookmarks” but I am not too familiar with it yet.

Step One: Acquire a Feed Reader

  • Sage – Firefox extension
  • Bloglines
  • Google Reader
  • Feed Reader

Step Two: Subscribe

Depending on your choice, after installation or registration, simply add the url of the feed to your desired reader!

So you would use the url https://onestarrynight.com/feed to add OSN to your feed reader.

Basically RSS allows you to get the content (aka the blog entries) without having to visit a website a billion times a day to see if they’ve updated. You can see if they’ve updated via their feed, read the entry, and then visit the entry (usually by clicking the title) to comment!

I hope this all made some sort of sense.

Anyway.

I will probably write a CSS tutorial on how I did the navigational tabs (*hint* it’s super easy!) so keep a look out for that.

Firefox’s RSS reader just essentially lists them like a favorites folder.  It’s not as convenient as the extension you mentioned or any other RSS extensions provided for Firefox, but it works :)

Hey thanks for the introduction to RSS feeds! I see people talk about them all the time but I had no idea what in the world they were for, so thank you. I’ll go read up and then see if I can possibly use it! And I can’t wait on that CSS tutorial… your navigator bar looks awesome! Cheers.
