Teen Domains

August 23rd 2004 / 1 minute to read

Hmm just a pondering…

Do you feel it is ok for teens, I’m talking 12-15 year olds here, to have public websites (domains specifically) featuring their name, locality, pictures of themselves, etc?

This post is over a year old which means the content may be outdated or no longer accurate.

I guess maybe your first name, and sometimes your last name. Location is a maybe, because I mean, if you say ‘US is where I live’, there’s barely a chance, but the street number… And pictures are a no, in my opinion… But hey, the only pictures I have are ones of a stuffed dog with a harelip, so… I think I’m safe.

Hmmmm… I don’t think so. Maybe using their first name is fine. But after that…no. See, my daughter is almost 13 and she has been nagging me about getting a blog. I told her when she is 13…to go ahead. But then I get freaked out. What if she reveals too much. At her age…it gets kind of dangerous. Hmmm…I am not sure what to do about her wanting a blog, yet. OIY!

As long as they’re mature enough to know the consequences of online communication. And as long they don’t put down anything too specific.

I love your site, by the way. :)

I guess it’s all right if somebody puts their first name and/or middle name on there… pictures are okay sometimes, since I’ve had them up since I was fifteen.  I don’t think they should put up their location because it’s too easy to be tracked.  I’ve always said that I live in the middle of nowhere, which is mostly true! :)

I had a website but it never contained personal information.

I personally would be very selective as to where I put my information and believe everyone should be very careful and more selective not just Teens. It’s been my experience that people (children especially) will find a way to do what they want to do regardless of a parents wishes. This is the reason I’ve always believed educating kids and talking to them with no topic being forbidden is the only tool I, as a parent, can provide. I’d be very sure my teens new the potential consiquences / results of such actions and would do my best to monitor the situation.  Then I’d pray that the dialogue and my parenting gave them enough tools to make good choices.
