My Thanksgiving Menu

November 23rd 2010 / 1 minute to read

I am SO freaking excited about making Thanksgiving Dinner.

I love to cook and more importantly, I love to cook for my family! This year I am having Daniel help me out because he loves to create, cook, and I’ve always felt that baking, roasting, whatever it is, even basic prep work like cutting celery, can give one a sense of accomplishment.

So this year we will be making the following from scratch:

  • Roast Turkey (20lbs!) with roasted garlic, white wine, fresh thyme, and butter
  • Gravy made from the turkey drippings
  • Creamy Mashed Potatoes
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Baby Carrots with Brown Sugar and Butter
  • Pumpkin Dinner Rolls
  • Hot Spinach Dip
  • Sausage, Apple, and Mushroom Cornbread Stuffing
  • Angel Biscuits
  • Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies
  • Apple Pie
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Double Pumpkin Bread Pudding

Am I forgetting any “classic” side dish or dessert? What are you cooking for Thanksgiving this year? If you’re not cooking, what are your plans?

This post is over a year old which means the content may be outdated or no longer accurate.

Sounds yummy! I love that you’re making, what my mother calls, “Candied Carrots!” SO GOOD :D Everything sounds delicious though – well, you can keep the cranberry sauce (;

Reply to Audrey

Oh yes, it’s a classic and just so easy to make!

LOL I also am not a huge fan of cranberry sauce but Daniel LOVES it. We actually made it today (more so had HIM make it) so that it can mellow out for the next day and a half in the fridge.

Andree

Hey Sarah,

That sounds like the all-time perfect Thanksgiving dinner! I’m sure it’s going to be stupendous! Hope you post some prep and post pics!

Oh thank you! I took some shots today of the cranberry sauce Danny made and of the pumpkin bread that’s meant for double pumpkin bread pudding… although it’s tempting to just eat the loaf and make another one tomorrow lol.

Keeshia

Where’s the green bean casserole?! lol I can’t wait to see what all is going to be at dinner on Thursday. There will be dozens of people there. I’m bringing the pumpkin pie :D

Reply to Keeshia

Surprisingly, I am not a big fan of green beans. I’ve tried multiple ways of cooking them and aside from the “fried” ones from TGI Friday’s, they always taste super bitter to me!

I’m driving myself and my grandparents to Algonquin to my uncle’s house. I guess we’re even closing the store for a couple of hours, since this is the last get together my younger brother will attend before he leaves in two weeks. And as far as food goes, Thanksgiving is really just another day for me, as I’m a vegetarian and my uncle doesn’t particularly go out of his way to make anything veggie-friendly. I’m usually hungry by the time we leave lol.

Reply to Jenn

But making things vegetarian is easy! Vegan I can see being more difficult since so much is made with butter this time of year.

How are you feeling about your brother leaving?

Jenn

I think it has to do with me being the ONLY vegetarian in the family (not just my uncles side, even my aunts). So, the past couple of times we’ve been there, I’ve pretty much starved. Even my father’s side is considerate enough to make sure that they have AT LEAST one vegetarian dish if they know i’m coming. It’s just the way my uncle and aunt are. We aren’t exactly the closest.
So far I’ve been alright in regards to my brother. He’s doing what he wants to do in life and I find it very admirable. However, I feel like this wave of fear is going to hit me at some point. I guess that’s to be expected. Staying strong though! I know i’ll be a wreck when we drop him off. I guess he told my mom that he’s pretty sure he’ll be sent to Iraq, kind of scary. He is my younger brother, after all. All in all, I think I really only feel pride so far.
The only strange thing that I’ve noticed is that I am having a hard time watching anything war-related where someone is getting hurt or dying, if even from a movie. I got choked up the other day.

Ok, I am currently huddled on the couch under a blanket battling some sort of horrible stomach bug and haven’t managed to keep down anything but juice in 24 hours AND YET that menu sounds incredibly delicious. My mouth is watering! You’re like magic!!

Luckily I don’t have to cook this year, but I DO have to ride in the car for 10 hours (did I mention I’m 35 weeks pregnant?) and sleep in a basement for four days. Although I think that’s a small price to pay for not having to host.

OHH I feel for you. I am so relieved it’s just a bug though! For me that’s how it was 24/7 my entire pregnancies with my boys lol.

OHHHH man. I could not STAND being in the car when I was that far along. Too hard to get my belly to fit lol.

Amy

Pumpkin dinner rolls sound delicious and I am not even always a fan of pumpkin things. We aren’t doing much for thanksgiving this year. Hubs is working and I am home with Spencer. I really want to make my mom’s dinner rolls. I may have to rip my house apart to find her missing recipe box.

Reply to Amy

I am super excited to see how the rolls turn out. I LOVE making anything with yeast!

Amanda

We do candied sweet potatoes, instead of the carrots. put them in the oven and melt marshmallows over them. Oh yummy. Is it thursday?!

Reply to Amanda

I’ve never been able to make sweet potatoes “sweet”. I always lean towards savory uses for them like sweet potato fries for example!

Catie

Your menu sounds DELISH. On Thanksgiving day, we’ve got to be at the hubs family for noon dinner, and then at my family for 5pm dinner. I’m going to be so rolly-poly it won’t even be funny. :D

Saturday I’m making our thanksgiving dinner. A medium sized turkey, mashed potatoes, bread dressing, maybe carrots. Branden will probably want green bean casserole (blech). And I’m thinking about doing apple crumble instead of apple pie this year, since it takes less time.

I was looking forward to doing some cooking but we do Thanksgiving at my aunts home and her and my gma do the majority of the cooking. When I asked what I could make and bring they asked if Id do the salad… but then they said to make it small because noone eats it. LOL I was like- oh gee, thanks. So- im making the salad that wont be eaten. hah! your Tday menu sounds amazing!!!

Okay, so when do we get to see a photo of today’s bounty? I’ve been drooling since you posted this menu. Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving.
